Solanum garcia-barrigae is a species from northern Colombia.  Tubers small and whitish.

The specific epithet, garcia-barrigae, honors Colombian botanist Hernando Garcia-Barriga.  While there is no completely standardized pronunciation for scientific names, the most common way to pronounce this species is probably so-LAY-num gar-SEE-ah bar-ree-GAY.

This species has particularly unusual flowers for a wild potato.  All flowers on an inflorescence open at about the same time and the flowers are small and sort of shabby.  Some plants have flowers with petals that are so thin that they are hard to recognize as flowers.  It doesn’t appear to attract the same kind of pollinator interest as most other wild potato species.

Glykoalkaloid content

I have found no published information, but the tubers are slightly to moderately bitter.

Cultivation

I have found seeds of this species easy to germinate using the standard conditions for S. tuberosum.

Accessions Evaluated

The following accessions were examined to prepare this profile.  I have evaluated 1/1 accessions currently available from the US potato genebank.

PI 498138

Moderate germination but very slow growing seedlings with cupped leaves.

Breeding

EBN has not been established for this species, but it will almost certainly be either 2EBN or 4EBN.  There are AP polyploids with both EBN levels.
