These are open pollinated seeds of the variety Bolivian Red. Bolivian Red is a really attractive variety with very good flavor. I have grown a lot of seed of this variety and the results are all over the place. Some of the seedlings have red skin and flesh like the parent, but there are also many yellows and whites.
Unlike our mixes, which contain seeds harvested from many different varieties, these seeds are all collected from a single parent variety, although they were open pollinated. Varieties grown from this seed are more likely to be similar to the parent than varieties from one of our seed mixes, although they may also sometimes bear no clear resemblance due to oca’s octaploid genome.
Oca is normally propagated vegetatively, by replanting tubers, which are clones. Probably because oca has been grown this way for hundreds or thousands of years, it is difficult to get true, botanical seed, which is the key to breeding new varieties.
When you grow out true oca seed, you will get a brand new variety that you can maintain indefinitely by replanting the tubers. Plants that are propagated vegetatively are very appealing this way: if you get a plant that you like, you have a stable new variety that is all your own.
