Solanum acaule is a wild potato that spans much of the higher elevations of the Andes from Peru to Argentina. It is probably the most frost resistant of the wild potatoes. Tubers are small, reaching about two inches at the most and usually much less. It is possible to select varieties that are palatable, but many plants grown from seed will produce tubers that are bitter and unsafe to eat. This is a tetraploid but 2EBN species that can be crossed directly to domesticated diploid potatoes, producing triploids.
