Solanum tuberosum subsp. andigenum 3x (Solanum x chaucha)

PI 611074 at Genesys

Accession Details

Authoritative accession: CIP 701568

A chaucha type triploid collected in Junin Peru in 1970.

Observations

Clone.  Large plants.  Dark purple stems.  Floriferous.  No detectable pollen.  Tubers dark blue with light yellow flesh and partial blue ring.  High yield.  Long day tuberization.  Moderate flowering and berrying.  Very low seed set.

Commentary

This variety sets berries readily and a guard cell chloroplast count was indeterminate for triploid/tetraploid, so I was skeptical that it is really a triploid potato.  However, when I cut open some of the berries, they contained few or no seeds, so that seems to settle the question.
