Solanum burkartii distribution map

Solanum burkartii is a northern Peruvian species with a very small distribution.  Plants 2.5 to 3 feet tall and occasionally much taller.  Long, narrow leaves.  Dark purple flowers.  Conical fruits.  Long stolons – 3 feet or more.  Tubers whitish, large for a wild species – four to five inches long and an inch in diameter.

The specific epithet, burkartii, honors Argentinian botanist Adolfo Burkart.  While there is no completely standardized pronunciation for scientific names, the most common way to pronounce this species is probably so-LAY-num bur-KAR-tee-eye.

It’s natural environment is cool and cloudy, moist ravines with rich soil (Ochoa 2004).

Very little has been written about this species.

Cultivation

I have found germination of this species to be poor and very slow, taking more than a month.

Breeding

EBN has not been reported for this species, but I have provisionally marked it as 2EBN, because that is the normal case for diploids with the A genome.
