Description

Solanum sogarandinum is a wild potato species native to central to northern Peru.

The specific epithet, sogarandinum, refers to Sogaranda, Peru.  While there is no completely standardized pronunciation for scientific names, the most common way to pronounce this species is probably so-LAY-num so-gar-AN-deen-um.

This species is the source of a dehydrin gene that is used to make transgenic cucumbers more cold resistant.

Resistances

This species can survive frosts down to 26 degrees F (-3.5 C) (Li 1977).  Vega (1995) found that this species is more frost tolerant than domesticated potato.

In an in vitro test of 10 wild diploid species, S. sogarandinum was one of the most heat resistant and yielded more under warm temperatures (Guedes 2019).

Glykoalkaloid content

Johns (1986b) found a glycoalkaloid content of 28 mg/100 g for a single accession.  The primary glycoalkaloids were solamarines.  This is close enough to the safety zone that it is pretty likely that edible varieties can be selected.
