One of our two 2015 ulluco introductions. The varieties Moclips and Humptulips were grown from seed and may be the first seed-grown varieties offered for sale anywhere since the Incas were breeding the crop. Ulluco seed has long been regarded as nearly impossible to produce, but we’ve been doing it for several years now and we’re looking forward to producing improved varieties for North America.
Moclips was our first seedling and didn’t disappoint. The plants are large and sprawling. The tuber yields occasionally exceed two pounds. Tubers range from round to long and lumpy. Most are solid purple, but some are white with purple spots. The flesh color is white. The flavor is not as intensely earthy as some varieties, probably about the middle of the range.
