True potato seed information and growing instructions |
This mix includes seeds derived from OSSI open source varieties. |
True potato seeds are classified as breeding seeds and germination is not guaranteed. |
This mix contains seeds collected from all the domesticated potatoes that we grow. Unlike other mixes, this one contains seeds from current year seedlings that have not been through any selection. There is a lot more genetic diversity in this mix, but you will probably find less keepers overall, so there is a trade-off. You are pretty much guaranteed to get plants with stolons four feet long, plants that produce no tubers, plants that produce 10 times the volume of berries as tubers, and bitter potatoes that you shouldn’t eat. You will, of course, also get plenty of good potatoes and possibly even plants that have exceptional pest or disease resistance or unusual climate tolerance. If our other mixes are just too tame for you and you want to see the really weird stuff, you have arrived at your destination. This mix will change much more from year to year than the other mixes, but you would probably have to grow 10,000 seeds or more to really notice. Typically this mix runs about 60% tetraploid and 40% diploid. The mix contains only seed from domesticated potatoes, although there may be some that have hybridized with wild species.
This mix is also available in bulk packets: one gram packets contain approximately 1,100 seeds and 5 gram packets contain approximately 5,500 seeds. If you want to go bigger than that, send me an email and we can figure out an appropriate price break.
