Kaiser’s Gems is a sibling mix – seeds from the best 13 plants of a cross of Kaiser Wilhelm x (D. coccinea x Yellow Gem). The selected plants all have sweet tubers prior to wintering, reasonable tuber yield (but sweetness was prioritized over productivity), abundant seed production, and whatever I considered to be sufficiently attractive flowers (the bar is not very high there). The traits of all three parent types are present in roughly equal amounts in the population. This would be a great place to start looking for new edible dahlias, particularly if you want some with fancier flowers than my standard D. coccinea mix. This mix goes back to two of the older garden dahlias in the trade (Kaiser Wilhelm, 1881) and Yellow Gem (1914) and should average about 3/4 garden dahlia to 1/4 D. coccinea in genetic content. The picture is from the same generation of seeds that I am selling, so your results should be similar.
